In the spring of 2022, the life of 30-year-old Caucasian male, Cody James Moity, was abruptly cut short in Slidell, Louisiana. On Easter Sunday, April 17, 2022, what should have been a day of celebration turned into a tragedy that would forever alter the lives of his loved ones. A dispute that had been simmering for days between his girlfriend and her sister escalated to a fatal confrontation.
That afternoon, a man identified as Derick Joseph Fehn, also 30, drove to the sister's home.
As Moity, his girlfriend, and their young child were leaving the residence and walking towards Fehn's vehicle, he produced a firearm and opened fire on the three of them. While Moity's girlfriend and their child were physically unharmed, Moity sustained a fatal gunshot wound. He was rushed to a local hospital for medical attention but ultimately succumbed to his injuries. His body was later transported to the University Medical Center in New Orleans.
The day following the shooting, on Monday, April 18, 2022, the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office announced the apprehension of Derick Joseph Fehn. He was located at a home in the neighboring St. Bernard Parish and taken into custody. Fehn faced a series of serious charges, including one count of second-degree murder for the death of Cody James Moity, two counts of attempted first-degree murder, and one count of obstruction of justice. Following his arrest, he was awaiting extradition back to St. Tammany Parish to face the legal proceedings connected to the deadly shooting.
