In a tragic turn of events on a late Sunday evening in Slidell, Louisiana, a young father's life was cut short. Tavante Williamson, a 26-year-old man, was fatally shot on June 25, 2023. The incident unfolded around 10:30 p.m. at an apartment complex on Gause Boulevard, where a dispute escalated to a point of no return.
The chain of events leading to the fatal encounter began with a phone call.
Williamson had contacted his former girlfriend, with whom he shared three children, asking her to pick up two of them. The woman arrived at his apartment complex, driven by her current boyfriend, Jamiel Miller. While she went to the apartment door to speak with Williamson, Miller remained in the car. As Williamson, his ex-girlfriend, and two of their children walked back towards the parking lot, a confrontation ensued.
In the parking lot, Miller shot Williamson in the chest. Emergency services were called to the scene, and Williamson was found unconscious on the ground. He was quickly transported to a local hospital but tragically succumbed to his injuries. The Slidell Police Department, led by Detective Scott O'Shaughnessy, launched an investigation into the shooting.
The investigation led to 25-year-old Jamiel Miller being identified as the primary suspect. On October 11, 2023, a St. Tammany Parish grand jury indicted Miller on charges of second-degree murder and obstruction of justice by tampering with evidence. The case proceeded to trial, where prosecutors presented the evidence gathered. Miller claimed he acted in self-defense, but the jury ultimately rejected this argument. In March 2025, Jamiel Miller was convicted of the second-degree murder of Tavante Williamson and now faces a mandatory life sentence.
