On a Saturday afternoon in Marrero, Louisiana, the lives of two people were brought to a violent and sudden end. David Wayne Sumera, a 36-year-old male, was shot and killed on September 24, 2022, in a brutal incident that also claimed the life of his companion, 26-year-old Alexxis Eymard. The double homicide occurred around 1:40 p.m. in the driveway of a home located in the 2600 block of Bay Adams Drive.
The quiet of the neighborhood was shattered by the sound of three gunshots, a chilling moment captured by a neighbor's doorbell camera.
The couple had arrived in a rented Ford Ranger pickup truck, and their bodies were discovered inside the still-running vehicle approximately four hours after the shooting. Both Sumera and Eymard had been fatally shot in the backs of their heads. The Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office quickly assessed the situation, with Sheriff Joe Lopinto stating that the killings appeared to be drug-related. It was reported that Sumera and Eymard were at the residence to deliver heroin. The home itself was known to be a site of suspicious activity, with a history of drug-related incidents.
The investigation into the murders led authorities to identify Michael A. Harris of Terrytown as the primary suspect. Investigators learned that Harris and Sumera knew each other. Critical evidence emerged from surveillance footage which showed Harris exiting the truck after the gunshots, his face concealed with a cloth, and carrying a black bag. Forensic analysis proved crucial as detectives recovered the cloth and found DNA that was a match to Harris. His DNA was also discovered on the rear passenger door handle of the pickup truck.
Following an extensive search, Michael A. Harris was arrested by a U.S. Marshals task force in Memphis, Tennessee, on February 16, 2023. He was subsequently tried for the murders. In August 2025, a jury found Harris guilty of two counts of first-degree murder. On September 3, 2025, at the age of 36, Harris was sentenced to two consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole or probation. He also received a concurrent 20-year sentence for being a felon in possession of a firearm, stemming from prior drug convictions.
