In the early morning hours of September 24, 2022, a sense of normalcy was shattered in New Orleans. Daimeion Christopher Brown, a 21-year-old African American male, was in a car with two friends at the intersection of South Carrollton Avenue and Willow Street. At approximately 2:30 a.m., the tranquil night was broken by the sound of gunfire. A sedan pulled alongside their vehicle, and an unknown gunman opened fire, forever altering the lives of those inside and the community that knew them.
The sudden violence of the attack left Daimeion Brown with fatal injuries, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The two other men in the car were also struck by the gunfire and were rushed to a local hospital for treatment. The conditions of the two surviving victims have not been publicly released. The New Orleans Police Department launched an investigation into the shooting, working to piece together the events that led to the tragic loss of a young life. To date, authorities have not publicly identified any suspects or a motive for the shooting, and no arrests have been made. The investigation remains ongoing.
Daimeion, who was born on July 14, 2001, was a lifelong resident of the Westbank of St. Charles Parish. A 2019 graduate of Hahnville High School, he was known by those who loved him as a humble and kind young man. His death sent ripples of grief through his family and friends, who remembered him for his warm and loving nature. His family, including his parents Nicole Ann Brown and Carlos McCoy, Sr., held a funeral service for him on October 8, 2022, at Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Ama, Louisiana, as they continue to hope for justice in his unsolved murder.
