In the late hours of a September weekend in Marrero, Louisiana, a life was tragically cut short. Wayne Martin, a 30-year-old male, was celebrating his birthday with family and friends, unaware of the violent turn the night would take. What began as a joyous occasion at a lounge on Ames Boulevard spilled out into a parking lot across the street, where the celebration would come to a devastating end.
An altercation that began in the bar is believed to have preceded the fatal shooting of
Martin. In the parking lot of an auto parts store, he was shot in the eye and collapsed, succumbing to his injuries at the scene on September 25, 2022. The sudden violence was part of a string of murders that had left the Marrero community on edge that weekend. Martin, a former cook at Papa John's Pizza and Zea Restaurant, was a native of New Orleans and a resident of Marrero.
The Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office launched an investigation that quickly led to a suspect. Lucien Bazley, 46 at the time of the incident, was identified as the shooter. The day after the shooting, a SWAT team surrounded a house where Bazley was located and, after an hour-long standoff, he surrendered to authorities. Bazley was subsequently arrested and booked on a charge of second-degree murder.
During his trial, Bazley claimed he acted in self-defense, alleging that he believed Martin was reaching for a weapon. However, surveillance footage from a nearby business captured the incident, showing Bazley walking ahead of Martin before turning and shooting him without any apparent provocation. Investigators found no weapon on Martin's body at the scene. The jury ultimately rejected Bazley's self-defense claim. While they did not find him guilty of the initial second-degree murder charge, they convicted him of the lesser charge of manslaughter, which carries a potential sentence of up to 40 years in prison. Bazley was also convicted of being a felon in possession of a firearm in an earlier trial related to the same incident and received a 20-year sentence for that charge.
