The suspect, John Pasch Jr., a 57-year-old white male, had just murdered his landlord, Leslie Shearer, a 45-year-old white male, in the gangway of the building.
Shearer's sister, Mary Wagner, a 69-year-old white female, witnessed the murder and screamed, prompting Pasch to attempt to drag her into the house. However, she managed to resist, and Pasch barricaded himself inside the building, taking a woman named Ms. Wiwatowski hostage.

He was evacuated by fellow officers and transported to Illinois Masonic Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 4:37 p.m. on April 3, 1986.
During the standoff, Pasch made multiple 911 calls, issuing threats against the hostage and the responding officers. He claimed to have armor-piercing ammunition and expressed a desire to kill another police officer. Pasch also threatened to detonate a bomb inside the house if the police attempted to force their way in, stating that the doors were rigged with explosives. The situation was tense and dangerous, with Pasch firing at officers from different positions within the house.
Ultimately, Pasch was apprehended and faced legal consequences for his actions. He was sentenced to death but later died while on death row. The tragic death of Patrolman Richard Wayne Clark highlighted the dangers faced by law enforcement officers and the bravery required to protect the community.
