On the day of her death, Nadia was working as a seasonal employee at a Nordstrom
department store on Michigan Avenue. The incident occurred on Black Friday, a busy shopping day, and it was also Nadia's 22nd birthday. Her ex-boyfriend, Marcus Dee, a 31-year-old man from Chicago, entered the store's accessories department where Nadia was working. After exchanging words with her, Dee shot Nadia in the head before turning the gun on himself, resulting in a murder-suicide.
Nadia had previously been in a year-long relationship with Dee, which ended in December 2013. During their relationship, Dee had physically and mentally abused Nadia. Despite their breakup, Dee continued to harass her. Nadia had considered filing a restraining order against him but ultimately decided against it after he threatened to kill himself.
Following the tragic incident, Nadia's family and friends were left devastated. Her brother, Harib, described her as an inspiring and intelligent sister who was very dear to the family. In the wake of her death, her family has been raising awareness about workplace violence and domestic abuse. They have joined forces with the Center for Domestic Violence Policy to educate others about the dangers of abusers who may target their victims at their workplaces.
The University of Chicago community also mourned Nadia's loss, with many recalling her positive impact on those around her. Her family expressed gratitude for the support and love they received from the university, which Nadia had cherished during her time as a student.
