When police arrived, they found both Terri and Terry with multiple gunshot wounds. Despite immediate medical attention, both victims were pronounced dead at the scene. According to unconfirmed police dispatch reports, three people walked up to their car and started shooting, resulting in the passenger side window being shattered and at least four bullet holes in the door.
Terri Player was a former student of St. Sabina Academy, a Catholic elementary school in Auburn Gresham, where she had graduated in 2022. Rev. Michael Pfleger, who confirmed her identity, expressed deep sorrow over her loss, highlighting her promising future and the impact of her death on the community. Pfleger noted that Terri's mother had moved her to Texas after graduation in an attempt to avoid the violence in Chicago, but it was unclear what brought her back to the city.
The shooting has left the community in shock and grief. Principal Tiffany Brown of St. Sabina Academy described Terri as a natural-born leader who was loved by her classmates and had a bright future ahead of her. The school has since sent in crisis counselors for students and faculty who may have known Terri.
As of the current date, no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting. Area 2 detectives are investigating the incident, which is part of a broader wave of violence that has raised concerns about public safety in Chicago. The lack of a functioning city camera in the area on the night of the shooting has also been noted as a potential hindrance to the investigation.
