Demarcus Boswell, an 18-year-old African American male, was tragically shot and killed on June 19, 2014, in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood on the Southwest Side of Chicago, Illinois. The incident occurred around 4:50 p.m. while Boswell was walking on the sidewalk with a group of people in the 2800 block of West 71st Street. He was approached by James Jones, also 18 years old, who fired multiple shots, striking Boswell in the face and torso.
Boswell was transported to Holy Cross Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 5:37 p.m. The Cook County Medical Examiner's office confirmed the cause of death as multiple gunshot wounds.
James Jones, the suspect in the shooting, was charged with first-degree murder and attempted murder. At the time of the charges, Jones was already incarcerated at the Cook County Jail for a prior incident. The investigation revealed that Jones approached Boswell and another individual, Kajuan Biddings, with a gun and fired at least six times, hitting Boswell three times from a distance of about four to six feet. Boswell, who was also 18 years old, did not have a weapon on him at the time of the shooting.
The case proceeded to trial, where Jones was found guilty of first-degree murder and aggravated discharge of a firearm. During the trial, evidence included a videotaped statement from Jones admitting to the crime and acknowledging that he had "murdered somebody." The court sentenced Jones to an aggregate term of 38 years in prison. Jones later appealed the sentence, arguing that the trial court failed to properly consider mitigating factors and that the sentence was excessive. However, the appellate court upheld the original sentence, affirming the trial court's decision.
