Jovante King, a 27-year-old African American male, was tragically killed on July 11, 2020, in Chicago, Illinois. The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning when King was driving in the 2800 block of North Leavitt Street. According to reports, a male suspect approached King's vehicle and shot him in the head. King was immediately transported to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead later that day.
The investigation revealed that the motive
behind the shooting was a dispute over a dice game. King had received threatening messages related to the game and had driven to the Lathrop Homes housing development to defuse the situation. Upon arrival, he was confronted by Saalik Berberena, who allegedly pointed a gun at King's head and, despite King's attempts to calm the situation, shot him at point-blank range. King's brother, who was present at the scene, engaged in a brief shootout with Berberena but neither was injured.
Berberena, who was arrested on an unrelated warrant in Crystal Lake, was charged with first-degree murder and multiple counts of aggravated battery to an officer. During his initial bail hearing, the judge remarked on the senselessness of the crime, emphasizing that it stemmed from a trivial dice game. Berberena ultimately pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of second-degree murder and was sentenced to 20 years in prison, with the possibility of parole in 2030.
