Ramon Breceda, a 16-year-old Hispanic male, was tragically killed on August 1, 2014, in the Little Village neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. The incident occurred near the corner of 24th Street and Washtenaw Avenue, a known gang hangout. Ramon was targeted by three teenagers who were allegedly looking for rival gang members. The suspects, Andrew Anania, 18, and 15-year-olds Ricardo Cortez and Eduardo Moreno, were charged with first-degree murder in connection with Ramon's death.
On the
night of the incident, Cortez shot Ramon Breceda, leading to a chaotic scene where another individual wrested the handgun away and shot both Cortez and Anania. Cortez was struck in the buttocks, while Anania was hit in the arm. Moreno was found fleeing the scene by responding officers and reportedly claimed he was not the one with the gun. All three suspects made admissions to their roles in the shooting.
The investigation revealed that the suspects were members or aspiring members of a gang and had come to the area specifically looking for opposing gang members. Ramon Breceda was identified as belonging to a gang that claimed the stretch of Washtenaw Avenue and territory extending as far east as Damen Avenue in the Pilsen neighborhood. The area where the shooting occurred was marked with gang symbols disrespecting rival gangs.
The suspects were ordered held without bail at Cook County Bond Court. The case highlighted the ongoing issue of gang violence in Chicago and the tragic loss of young lives caught in the crossfire. The legal proceedings against Anania, Cortez, and Moreno continued as they faced serious charges for their involvement in the fatal shooting of Ramon Breceda.
