Neal David Sumrell, a 34-year-old African American male, tragically lost his life on August 23, 2019, in Chicago, Illinois. Sumrell was fatally shot in a violent incident that also left a 28-year-old woman critically injured. The shooting occurred in the 4200 block of Iowa Street in the Humboldt Park neighborhood. Sumrell was struck seven times, while the woman was hit three times, sustaining injuries to her chest, back, and arm. Both victims were transported to Mt.
Sinai Hospital, where Sumrell was pronounced dead.
The investigation into Sumrell's death led to the identification and subsequent arrest of two suspects. Lee Davis, a 23-year-old male, was identified as one of the perpetrators. Davis, who has a criminal history including a 2014 conviction for unauthorized use of a weapon, was considered armed and dangerous. An arrest warrant was issued for Davis on August 27, 2019. He was charged with first-degree murder in connection to Sumrell's death. The second suspect, Antwane Lashley, an 18-year-old male, was arrested on August 29, 2019. Lashley faced charges of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, and aggravated battery. At the time of the shooting, Lashley was out on bond for a previous weapons charge.
The legal proceedings following the arrests of Davis and Lashley were significant. Lashley was held without bail, reflecting the severity of the charges against him. The case highlighted ongoing issues of gun violence and the challenges faced by law enforcement in addressing such crimes.
