Mahadi Hering, a 19-year-old Black male, was fatally shot on August 27, 2016, in the Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood of Chicago, IL. The incident occurred just after midnight when Mahadi and a 16-year-old boy were standing outside a meat market on the corner of 71st and Rhodes Avenue. As they crossed the street, a voice called them "cowards," prompting them to return and engage in a physical altercation with two other boys.
During the fight, the other boys pulled out guns and began shooting. Mahadi was struck in the back, arm, and head, while the 16-year-old was shot in the thigh but survived his injuries. Mahadi was transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he succumbed to his wounds.
The investigation into Mahadi Hering's death led to the arrest of Jarvis Hayes, a 17-year-old Black male and member of the Black Disciples gang from 400East. Jarvis was identified as the shooter and was apprehended in his high school gym class later in 2016. He was charged with Mahadi's murder and subsequently sentenced in 2018 to serve 15 years in prison. However, due to various factors, his projected release date is April 18, 2026, meaning he will serve a total of 8-10 years.
Mahadi Hering was remembered as a humble, loyal, and loving young man who attended Kennedy King College and Paul Robeson High School. Despite his involvement in gang activities, he was deeply loved and respected by those around him. His death left a lasting impact on his community, and he is now commemorated by the name "Hadi Way" in his honor.
