On the evening of March 3, 2023, at approximately 7:30 p.m., 18-year-old Ruben Velazquez and a 17-year-old companion were seated in a vehicle near the intersection of J and 10th Streets in Orange Cove, California, when they were both shot. Emergency responders transported them to a local hospital, where Velazquez succumbed to his injuries. The 17-year-old was initially listed in critical condition but was later released from the hospital.
