Scott Travis Thompson, a 45-year-old African American man, was tragically killed on December 17, 2016, in Chicago, Illinois. He was one of four victims found dead in a home on the Far South Side of Chicago, in the Fernwood neighborhood. The incident occurred in what police believe was a home invasion and robbery related to a drug sale earlier in the day. The other victims included Elijah Jackson, 36, Shacora Jackson, 41, and Nateyah Yafah Hines, 19.
All four victims were found with gunshot wounds, and the location was suspected to be a drug house.
The investigation revealed that the shooting was not random. On March 30, 2017, Lionel Parks, a 29-year-old man, was charged with four counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder in connection with the incident. Parks, who was on parole and home monitoring at the time, had visited the home three times on the day of the murders. The first visit was to buy marijuana, and the final visit, accompanied by an accomplice, was to rob the family. During the robbery, the offenders became agitated and began executing the victims after discovering a female victim in a rear bedroom with her cellphone.
Prosecutors presented evidence including home monitoring records, surveillance video, and cellphone records that placed Parks at the scene of the crime. One of the survivors, who escaped by playing dead, later identified Parks as one of the perpetrators. Another survivor, one of Shacora Jackson's teenage daughters, remained on life support, unable to respond to touch or sound.
The case highlighted the brutal nature of the crime and the impact on the victims' families. The community mourned the loss of Scott Travis Thompson and the other victims, as they sought justice and healing from the devastating event.
