Steven Freeman, a 33-year-old male from Chicago, IL, died on January 6, 2017. His death was the result of a violent altercation. Freeman was found dead with multiple gunshot wounds in his home. The investigation revealed that the incident occurred during a heated argument with his long-time girlfriend, Mary Katherine Higdon. Higdon, a 24-year-old preschool aide, was arrested on the same day and charged with malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the
commission of a crime.
During the trial, the prosecution presented evidence that Freeman and Higdon had a tumultuous relationship, with frequent arguments and instances of physical violence. Witnesses testified that Higdon had a history of threatening behavior and had previously bragged about her knowledge of firearms. The defense, however, argued that Higdon acted in self-defense, claiming she suffered from Battered Woman Syndrome.
