On April 4, 2017, Clarence Riley, a 68-year-old African American male, was found dead in his home in Pembroke Township, Illinois. The Kankakee County Sheriff's Office responded to a call at approximately 6:53 a.m. regarding a shooting at 17774 E 7000S Rd. Upon arrival, deputies discovered Clarence Riley with multiple gunshot wounds to his chest. Despite immediate efforts, Riley was pronounced dead at the scene by Coroner Bob Gessner.
The investigation quickly identified Riley's stepson, 43-year-old Willie E. Nichols Jr., as the primary suspect. Nichols was located driving a vehicle later that morning and was found in possession of a handgun. After a brief standoff, Nichols was taken into custody and transported to the Jerome Combs Detention Center. The arrest was a collaborative effort involving the Illinois State Police and local police departments, which helped de-escalate a potentially violent situation.
Further details emerged during the investigation, revealing that Nichols had a history of legal troubles. He was previously indicted for the sexual assault of a 13-year-old girl in 2013 and was out on bond at the time of the shooting. He was sentenced to 26 years in prison for the murder, with an additional sentence for the prior sexual assault charge.
