Armondo Reyes, a 28-year-old Hispanic male, was tragically killed on November 7, 2017, in Chicago, Illinois. The incident occurred in the Brighton Park neighborhood, where Reyes was shot multiple times while walking on the sidewalk. According to reports, Reyes had just returned from grocery shopping with his wife and child when he was gunned down. He was transported to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries from gunshot wounds to his back.
The investigation into Armondo
Reyes' death revealed that Uriel Gurrola, a 22-year-old male, was responsible for the shooting. Gurrola, who was on house arrest for a pending aggravated battery case, violated the conditions of his bond on the day of the murder. He was driving his grandfather’s Hyundai Santa Fe when he spotted Reyes, a rival gang member, on the sidewalk. Deciding to carry out a revenge shooting, Gurrola circled the block and fired six shots at Reyes, who was unarmed and with his family at the time.
Following the shooting, Gurrola and his accomplices disposed of the spent shell casings and the handgun used in the crime. They then called a friend to pick up the car and separated to avoid detection. Despite their efforts, private surveillance footage captured the vehicle's license plate, leading detectives to Gurrola’s grandfather. The grandfather confirmed that Gurrola had taken the car without permission on the day of the murder. A subsequent search of Gurrola’s bedroom revealed his electronic monitoring bracelet, further implicating him in the crime.
It took three years for law enforcement to apprehend Uriel Gurrola. During his interrogation, Gurrola initially denied being the shooter, claiming he was merely the driver. However, he later admitted to knowing that the group was planning a revenge shooting. Gurrola was charged with first-degree murder and held without bail. His case highlights the ongoing issues of gang violence and the challenges faced by law enforcement in bringing perpetrators to justice.
