Jonathan Kenneth Jackson, a 27-year-old African American male, was fatally shot on March 22, 2018, in the West Side Homan Square neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. Jackson was in a van with his family, about to close the door to the vehicle, when a blue sedan pulled up. A person wearing a ski mask stepped out and opened fire at 9:18 p.m. in the 1100 block of South Independence. Jackson, who resided in the 1400 block of South Kedzie, was shot in the abdomen.
He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The incident was investigated as a homicide by Area North detectives. The shooter, who wore a ski mask, got back into the blue sedan and drove away from the scene. Jackson was identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office the following day. The shooting left Jackson's family and community in shock, as he was a young man with a promising future.
At the scene, blood covered the pavement near the van. A man waiting outside the crime scene tape mentioned that his sister, who shared a child with Jackson, was in the van with him during the shooting. The incident was one of two fatal shootings that occurred within two hours and two miles apart on the West Side of Chicago that evening.
Despite the investigation, no arrests or suspects have been reported in connection with Jackson's murder. The case remains unsolved, and the community continues to seek justice for the young man whose life was tragically cut short.
