Ricardo Ruvalcaba, 18, was killed on December 22, 2014, during a home invasion in Chicago. Five individuals, including a 14-year-old, were charged with his murder. The group, which included Schanise Barfield, Diamond Gamble, Nathaniel Jefferson, and Quinton Washington, planned the robbery believing they would find cash, marijuana, and electronics in Ruvalcaba's residence.
They entered his home armed, and during the confrontation, Ruvalcaba woke up and chased one of the intruders but was shot on the front steps of the house. He succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The 14-year-old suspect's involvement highlights the troubling influence of gangs on local youth. According to the boy's mother, he had started associating with the wrong crowd over the summer, and the incident occurred shortly before she intended to relocate him to Las Vegas to remove him from these negative influences. This tragic event underscores the broader problem of youth getting drawn into violent crime in Chicago. The adult suspects were all charged with first-degree murder and held without bail, while the juvenile suspect was also held in custody.
