Ricky Lamar Green Jr., an 18-year-old African American male, tragically lost his life on March 23, 2018, in Champaign, Illinois. Ricky was born on April 22, 1999, in Chicago, Illinois, and was a resident of Champaign at the time of his death. He attended Circle Academy and was known for his love of basketball and boxing. Ricky was a loving son, father, and brother, leaving behind his parents, Ricky L. Green Sr. and Angela Toms, as well as his children, Rahmir Brown and Alayah Green.
On the night of March 23, 2018, at approximately 12:09 a.m., Champaign Police responded to a report of gunshots in the 100 block of Apricot Drive. Upon arrival, officers found Ricky Green suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound. Despite immediate medical care and transportation to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, Illinois, Ricky succumbed to his injuries.
Following an extensive investigation by Champaign Police, the Champaign County State’s Attorney’s Office obtained an arrest warrant for Micheal Chatman, a 20-year-old male, for the offense of murder. Chatman was arrested on February 4, 2020, in Plano, Illinois, with the assistance of the United States Marshals Service. He was held at the Kendall County Correctional Facility awaiting extradition back to Champaign.
A second suspect, Michael Simmons, a 22-year-old male, was also arrested in connection with Ricky Green's murder. Simmons was apprehended on February 27, 2020, in Champaign, Illinois, and was held at the Champaign County Correctional Center awaiting future court proceedings. Both arrests were part of an ongoing investigation by the Champaign Police Department.
