Kevontay Montgomery, a 22-year-old African American male, tragically lost his life on July 21, 2018, in Chicago, IL. The incident occurred in the East Garfield Park neighborhood on the West Side of Chicago. On that fateful night, around 9:40 p.m., Kevontay and six other men were gathered at a park bench in the 3100 block of West Fulton Avenue when four individuals approached them and opened fire.
Kevontay was critically injured and was rushed to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 8:28 p.m. on Sunday, July 22, 2018. An autopsy revealed that he died from a gunshot wound to the back, and his death was ruled a homicide.
The shooting also claimed the life of 30-year-old Tavish Harris, who was shot in the head and pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital later that night. Five other men, ranging in age from 26 to 47, were also injured in the attack and were taken to various hospitals in different conditions. The 47-year-old man was shot in the chest and leg and was in critical condition, while a 33-year-old man was struck multiple times in the back and a 31-year-old man was shot in the face, both in serious condition. A 30-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his leg and a 26-year-old man shot in the arm and leg were also among the injured.
As of now, there have been no arrests or suspects identified in connection with the shooting. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward. The tragic loss of Kevontay Montgomery and the injuries sustained by the other victims highlight the ongoing issue of gun violence in Chicago and the need for continued efforts to address this critical problem.
