On April 5, 2020, in Chicago's Austin neighborhood, 31-year-old African American male Dywayne D. Head was fatally shot following an altercation over cafeteria food. The incident began around 6:15 p.m. in the cafeteria of a single-room occupancy building located in the 500 block of North Central Avenue. Head had offered to share his food with another individual, which led to an argument with 49-year-old African American male Wayne Kyles, a custodian at the building.
The dispute continued
as Head and the other individual left the building and walked to a nearby park. Kyles initially drove home in a Toyota, then switched to a Honda Element SUV and returned to the area in search of Head. Failing to locate him at the park, Kyles went back to the building. At approximately 7:30 p.m., Head approached the building, and another confrontation ensued between him and Kyles. During this altercation, Kyles allegedly drew a firearm and shot Head multiple times, resulting in his death at the scene.
The shooting was captured by a surveillance camera across the street, and officers recovered five shell casings and a bullet fragment near Head's body. Following the incident, Kyles was arrested and charged with one count of first-degree murder. He appeared at a bond hearing where he was ordered to be held without bail, with his next court date scheduled for May 13, 2020.
