Lisa Marie York, a 41-year-old woman from Lansing, IL, was tragically killed on July 23, 2019. The incident occurred during a sale arranged over the internet. Marvin Gibson-Jones, a 21-year-old man from Calumet City, was charged with first-degree murder in connection with her death. The sale took place in a parking lot at 2500 Bernice Rd., where Gibson-Jones allegedly met York and another man. During the encounter, Gibson-Jones fired multiple shots, striking York in the head. She was pronounced dead at St. Margaret’s Hospital in Hammond, Indiana. The Cook County medical examiner’s office ruled her death a homicide.
Gibson-Jones was denied bail by a Cook County judge and was held without bail. His criminal history includes a 2018 weapons conviction and a warrant issued in 2019 for fleeing and eluding police. He was also released on bond in June 2019 on charges of obstructing identification. The shooting stemmed from the sale of an item listed on a social media site. The other man involved in the incident was shot multiple times in the body and treated at Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn before being released.
Lansing police encouraged residents to carry out internet sales at safe spaces, such as the Lansing police’s “Internet Purchase Exchange Location” just outside the department’s main entrance. Gibson-Jones was scheduled to appear in court again on August 16, 2019.
