Rayveon Hutchins, a 20-year-old African American male, was tragically shot and killed on November 22, 2019, in the University Village neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. The incident occurred around 11:59 p.m. in the 1200 block of South Throop Street. According to reports, Hutchins was approached by a man who opened fire, striking him in the head, hip, and back. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Cook County medical examiner's office ruled his death a homicide due to multiple gunshot wounds.
The investigation quickly led to the arrest of Ed Rush, a 24-year-old male, who was charged with first-degree murder in connection with Hutchins' death. Rush was allegedly seen on surveillance footage and by a witness approaching Hutchins in a parking lot and firing the fatal shots. At the time of the shooting, Rush was out on bond for a previous charge of aggravated battery of a police officer and was supposed to be on electronic home monitoring. However, records indicated that he was not at home during the time of the shooting.
Further details revealed that Rush had a contentious relationship with the mother of his child, who had recently started dating Hutchins. Rush had confronted her multiple times about her relationship with Hutchins and had become abusive, leading her to obtain an order of protection against him. On the night of the shooting, Rush allegedly confronted Hutchins in a parking lot and shot him multiple times. Following the incident, Rush was arrested and a 9mm handgun connected to the case was recovered by the police.
In a bond hearing, Rush was ordered to be held without bail. The case against him included strong evidence such as surveillance footage and witness testimony.
