Jason A. Thomas, a 36-year-old male from Granite City, Illinois, was found deceased from gunshot wounds on January 9, 2020. The Granite City Police Department received a report around midnight and initiated an investigation that led them to a St. Louis hotel where two suspects were apprehended. The suspects were identified as Kadeem L. Noland, a 27-year-old male from St. Louis, Missouri, and Kristine N. Mills, a 34-year-old female from Granite City.
Noland was charged with first-degree murder and unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon. Mills was initially charged with first-degree murder but later pleaded guilty to two counts of obstructing justice for lying to police. She was sentenced to six years in prison. Noland's case proceeded, and he was found guilty of first-degree murder and sentenced to 65 years in prison. The motive for the shooting was linked to romantic relationships among the individuals involved.
The investigation revealed that Noland and Mills left a Granite City home together after the deadly shooting and were later found and arrested in a St. Louis motel. Noland, who had a prior conviction for robbery in 2010, was accused of shooting Thomas. The case was presented to the Madison County State’s Attorney’s Office, and both suspects were held without bond.
During Mills' sentencing, Thomas' brother, Ronald Wilderness, expressed forgiveness towards the defendants, stating that his Bible reading convinced him that his brother would also forgive them.
