Timmins, who was serving with the Pontoon Beach Police Department, was shot while investigating a suspected stolen vehicle at a Speedway gas station. As he approached the vehicle, the suspect, later identified as Scott Hyden, a 31-year-old white male from Highland, Illinois, opened fire, striking Officer Timmins in the face and neck. Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital in Granite City and later transferred to a St. Louis hospital, Timmins succumbed to his injuries.
The incident led to the immediate arrest of Scott Hyden at the scene. Hyden, who was on federal parole at the time, faced multiple charges, including first-degree murder, aggravated discharge of a firearm at a peace officer, unlawful possession of weapons by a felon, and possession of a stolen firearm. He was held in the Madison County Jail without bond. In April 2022, Scott Hyden pleaded guilty to the first-degree murder of Officer Tyler Timmins. The court proceedings included a powerful victim impact statement from Officer Timmins' widow, Linsey Timmins, who expressed the profound loss and the impact of the senseless act of violence on her family. The court sentenced Hyden to life in prison without the possibility of parole, ensuring that he would never be able to harm another person again.
