Despite being rushed to the hospital, Ayers succumbed to his injuries shortly thereafter.
The investigation quickly led to the arrest of Sean Bennett, a 44-year-old male from Madison, Illinois. Bennett was apprehended shortly after the shooting and was charged with multiple serious offenses. These charges included three counts of first-degree murder, armed robbery, use of a stolen firearm in the commission of an offense, unlawful possession of a stolen firearm, and reckless discharge of a firearm. The charges stemmed from Bennett allegedly shooting Ayers with a stolen Smith & Wesson M&P 9 mm handgun and subsequently taking an Anderson Manufacturing AR15-style pistol from him. Additionally, Bennett was accused of firing multiple shots in the direction of another individual during the incident.
The Madison County State’s Attorney’s Office handled the prosecution of the case, and Bennett was held on a $2 million bond at the Granite City Police Department.
