William DeAnthony Spruell, a 21-year-old African American male, tragically lost his life on April 24, 2020, in Crest Hill, Illinois. The incident occurred during a drug deal at a Taco Bell parking lot. Spruell met Dwight Watkins, a 23-year-old Plainfield resident, for the transaction. An altercation ensued, leading to Watkins fatally shooting Spruell with a single shot.
The Crest Hill Police Department, along with the Will-Grundy Major Crimes Task Force, conducted a thorough investigation. They interviewed several witnesses and reviewed video surveillance footage from nearby businesses. Watkins was identified as the shooter and was arrested on August 25, 2020.
Watkins initially faced first-degree murder charges, but these were later reduced to second-degree murder as part of a plea agreement. On June 1, 2022, Watkins was sentenced to 16 years in prison. The plea deal was reached because it was unlikely a jury would convict Watkins of first-degree murder. Watkins' defense attorneys and prosecutors agreed that the plea agreement was fair.
Spruell was a well-known athlete in the Joliet area, having graduated from Joliet West High School, where his photo is displayed in their Champions Hall for wrestling. At the time of his death, he was enrolled in college, pursuing a Business Management Degree.
