Anthony Maggette, a 53-year-old African American male, was tragically shot and killed on June 19, 2020, in the Grand Crossing neighborhood of Chicago, IL. The incident occurred at approximately 3:25 a.m. in the 900 block of East 79th Street. Maggette was standing on a sidewalk with two other individuals when Daevon Brownlee, a 20-year-old man from Kenwood, allegedly opened fire on the trio.
Maggette was struck multiple times and later succumbed to his injuries at a nearby hospital.
The shooting also resulted in injuries to a 45-year-old woman, who was shot in the ankle, and a 43-year-old man, who was shot in the abdomen. Both victims were taken to the hospital for treatment and survived their injuries.
Daevon Brownlee was arrested and charged with first-degree murder, three counts of attempted murder, and three counts of aggravated battery with a firearm. He was ordered held without bail during a court appearance and was due back in court shortly after the incident. Brownlee had a prior criminal record, having been sentenced to a year in prison in December 2019 for unauthorized use of a weapon. He was released on time served.
The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office conducted an autopsy and determined that Maggette's death was a homicide caused by multiple gunshot wounds. The case garnered significant attention due to the violent nature of the crime and the subsequent legal proceedings against Brownlee.
