Kyle M. Johnson, a 19-year-old male from Olney, Illinois, tragically lost his life on September 6, 2020. He was found with multiple gunshot wounds at an intersection in Olney and was subsequently taken to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The incident led to a series of arrests and legal proceedings involving multiple individuals.
Rick Meador, a 19-year-old male, was one of the primary suspects in the case. He, along with his then 16-year-old girlfriend, fled to Mt.
Vernon and later to Florida, where they were apprehended three weeks after the murder. Meador pleaded guilty to one of four counts of first-degree murder and was sentenced to 50 years in prison. His girlfriend, Kalia Arnone, was tried as an adult and received a 15-year sentence for conspiracy to commit murder.
Three other individuals were also implicated in the crime. Tara Haws, a 33-year-old female, was charged with multiple counts of first-degree murder and was sentenced to 50 years in prison. Dale Boatman Jr., a 32-year-old male, was charged with first-degree murder by accountability and conspiracy to commit first-degree murder. He later pleaded guilty to aggravated battery through the discharge of a firearm and received a 15-year sentence. Misty Whipple, a 44-year-old female from Mt. Vernon, was charged with felony aiding a fugitive for renting a van to help Meador and Arnone escape to Florida. She pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 180 days in jail and 24 months probation.
The case highlighted the collaborative efforts of the Illinois State Police, Olney Police Department, and Richland County Sheriff's Department in bringing the perpetrators to justice. The legal proceedings and sentences handed down to those involved underscored the severity of the crime and the commitment of law enforcement to ensuring accountability.
