Salim Khamo, a 66-year-old male of Iraqi descent, was tragically killed on October 17, 2022, during an attempted robbery at his liquor store, J and K Food and Liquor, located in Chicago's West Ridge neighborhood. Khamo, who had emigrated from Iraq in 1992 seeking a better life for his family, was working behind the counter when a man entered the store around 10 p.m. The suspect, who arrived on a bicycle, demanded money from Khamo. When Khamo refused, the suspect shot him in the chest.
Despite Khamo's attempt to return fire, the suspect fled the scene, leaving behind his bicycle and cell phone. Khamo was transported to a suburban hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.
The Chicago Police Department launched an investigation into the murder of Salim Khamo. Surveillance footage from the store showed the suspect entering and fleeing the scene, which provided crucial evidence. The suspect, identified as 53-year-old Sean Dunnavant, was later arrested and charged with two counts of murder and one count of attempted robbery with a firearm. Dunnavant's arrest was facilitated by the discovery of his cell phone at the crime scene, which contained photos of his social security card, driver's license, and a 9mm handgun consistent with the one used in the shooting. Additionally, community tips and surveillance images helped police identify and apprehend Dunnavant.

His family and customers described him as someone who treated everyone like family and was always willing to help those in need. Khamo was just weeks away from retiring and had dreams of spending his retirement on a farm with his grandchildren.
