Julian Castillo, a 16-year-old Hispanic male, was tragically killed on February 26, 2021, in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood of Chicago, IL. Julian was visiting a friend at an apartment in the 6300 block of South Richmond Street when he got into an argument with two individuals. The altercation escalated, and Julian ran out of the apartment and down the street. The two individuals chased him and shot him multiple times.
Julian was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
The suspects, Jesus Moro, 21, and Sergio Rodriguez, 20, were arrested nearby within minutes of the shooting. Both men were charged with first-degree murder. Rodriguez also faced a charge of unlawful use of a weapon. The two suspects were reputed members of the Latin Kings gang, and the incident was reportedly gang-related. Julian Castillo was identified as a member of the rival Two-Six gang. The confrontation began when Rodriguez recognized the hairstyle of another Two-Six gang member who was getting a haircut from Julian. Rodriguez pulled out a gun and chased the man downstairs to where Julian was. After questioning Julian about his gang affiliation, Rodriguez began punching him. Julian broke free and ran outside, but was shot multiple times by Moro, who emerged and opened fire.
Both suspects were ordered held without bail and were due back in court shortly after their arrest. The case highlighted the ongoing gang violence in Chicago and the tragic loss of young lives caught in the crossfire. Julian Castillo's death was a stark reminder of the dangers faced by youth involved in gang activities and the devastating impact on their families and communities.
