Kendra Gardner, a 41-year-old African American woman, was found dead inside a parked car in the Lakeview neighborhood of Chicago on May 25, 2021. Her body was discovered in the front seat of a gold Cadillac sedan, with multiple gunshot wounds to her neck, left cheek, and the top of her head. The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office ruled her death a homicide.
Gardner had been reported missing earlier that day, and her body was found after a passerby noticed an unresponsive person inside
the vehicle. The investigation revealed that Gardner had attended a party with her boyfriend, Manuel Thompson, on May 22, 2021. Surveillance footage showed the couple leaving the party together. Thompson later admitted to shooting Gardner while driving on the expressway, following an argument about his infidelity.
Thompson, who had been Gardner's boyfriend for about ten years, was charged with first-degree murder and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon. He was arrested at his South Shore home, where police found a gun in his pants pocket, although it was a different caliber than the murder weapon. Thompson's defense attorney claimed that he denied admitting to the crime and had been suffering from significant medical issues since 2013.
The investigation also revealed that Thompson had deleted his Facebook account and contacted a friend to inform them of his new phone number and plans to leave town. He never reported his car or Gardner missing. Surveillance video showed Gardner's car arriving in the Lakeview area around 2:16 a.m. on May 24, and CTA camera footage captured Thompson at the nearby Wellington Brown Line station, where he called a friend to arrange a Lyft pickup.
Thompson was held without bail and faced legal proceedings for his involvement in Gardner's death. The case highlighted the tragic consequences of domestic violence and the importance of addressing such issues within relationships.
