Francisco Reyes-Hernandez, a 38-year-old Hispanic male from Schaumburg, Illinois, tragically lost his life on October 25, 2021, in Elgin, Illinois. Reyes-Hernandez was one of the victims in a violent shooting incident that took place in an apartment located in the 200 block of Jackson Street. On that fateful day, Joaquin Lopez-Villagomez, a 31-year-old male from Elgin, along with two other unidentified men, allegedly entered the apartment and opened fire, resulting in the deaths of Francisco Reyes-Hernandez and Ricardo Sanchez, a 37-year-old male whose address was not disclosed. A third man was also injured in the attack but survived.
The Elgin police swiftly responded to the incident and launched an investigation. Joaquin Lopez-Villagomez was subsequently arrested and charged with multiple counts, including six counts of first-degree murder, one count of attempted first-degree murder, home invasion, unlawful restraint, and unlawful use of a weapon by a felon. He is currently being held in the Kane County jail with a bail set at $5 million. The Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office is handling the prosecution, and Lopez-Villagomez's next court appearance was scheduled for November 5, 2021, where a judge was to hear a motion to revoke his bond for an unrelated armed violence charge.
The motive behind the attack remains unclear, and authorities have not provided information on whether the incident was gang-related. The investigation into the shooting is ongoing, with police continuing to search for the two other suspects involved in the attack. Francisco Reyes-Hernandez's death, along with that of Ricardo Sanchez, marked the fourth and fifth homicides in Elgin for the year 2021. The city had been experiencing a surge in violent incidents, with the number of gunfire incidents reaching 58 by the time of the shooting.
