Laron Powell, a 42-year-old African American man, was tragically killed on June 15, 2022, in the Austin neighborhood on Chicago's West Side. Powell was inside a vehicle around 6:05 p.m. in the 5200 block of West Kamerling Avenue when he was shot multiple times in the head, back, and arm. He was transported to Humboldt Park Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries three days later on June 18, 2022.
The Cook County medical examiner's office confirmed that Powell died from multiple gunshot wounds, and his death was ruled a homicide.
The investigation into Powell's death revealed that the shooting was a targeted attack. Two individuals, Glenn Bland, 38, and Adrianna Vanzant, 18, were charged with first-degree murder in connection with the incident. Prosecutors stated that Bland and Vanzant had "subleased" a rental car, which they used to follow Powell to the location where they opened fire. Surveillance footage captured the rented Nissan SUV fleeing the scene, and tollway cameras tracked the vehicle heading to the suburbs. Cellphone data also linked Bland and Vanzant to the crime scene.
Nine 9mm shell casings and two 40-caliber casings were recovered from the scene. The rented vehicle was later found with additional shell casings that matched those used in the shooting. Bland, who has a history of violent crimes including armed robbery, rape, and battery, was out on bail for an attempted murder charge at the time of Powell's killing. Vanzant, who was a minor at the time of the murder, has no prior criminal record but is undergoing treatment for bipolar disorder. Both suspects were denied bail and are awaiting trial.
The case has drawn significant attention due to the brutal nature of the crime and the backgrounds of the suspects. Bland's extensive criminal history and Vanzant's mental health issues have been focal points in the ongoing legal proceedings.
