On June 24, 2022, 19-year-old male Yazeed Emad “Yaz” Abunajim, who was of Middle Eastern descent, was fatally shot in Chicago, Illinois. The incident occurred in the Altgeld Gardens neighborhood on the city's Far South Side. According to police reports, the shooting took place in the 800 block of East 132nd Street during the early hours of the morning. Yazeed Abunajim was involved in an argument with another individual when he was shot in the shoulder.
He was transported to Roseland Community Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Further investigation revealed that the confrontation stemmed from a dispute over the authenticity of a $100 bill. Prosecutors stated that Yazeed Abunajim, a 19-year-old male of Middle Eastern ethnicity, had arranged to meet 18-year-old Datavion Braxton through Snapchat for a marijuana transaction. Abunajim arrived at the meeting location in a vehicle accompanied by two friends. During the exchange, Braxton handed over a $100 bill, which Abunajim suspected was counterfeit. He instructed the driver to leave the scene, and as the car began to move, Braxton allegedly fired a single shot, striking Abunajim in the shoulder.
Chicago police later identified Datavion Braxton as the suspect based on witness statements and digital evidence. Abunajim's two companions reportedly identified Braxton as the shooter, and data from Braxton's Snapchat account placed him at the scene during the time of the incident. Additionally, a CHA security camera reportedly captured the shooting. Braxton was arrested in Kankakee County, where he had already been in custody for a separate firearm-related charge stemming from an incident on June 16.
Braxton now faces charges of first-degree murder for the death of 19-year-old male Yazeed Abunajim, as well as two counts of attempted murder for allegedly endangering Abunajim's companions. A judge ordered Braxton to be held in custody pending trial. The case underscores the tragic consequences of a seemingly minor dispute escalating into fatal violence, leaving a young man of Middle Eastern descent dead and another facing serious criminal charges.
