Matthew E. McGrath, a 29-year-old male of Irish ethnicity, was a Special Detective with the Illinois Central Railroad Police. On the night of August 8, 1903, McGrath was shot and killed by three thieves in a Pullman railroad car within the Illinois Central Yard in Chicago, Illinois. The incident occurred just before midnight, and McGrath succumbed to his injuries shortly after.
