In the quiet town of Millersville, Tennessee, a story of profound loss and lingering questions began to unfold around May 1, 2011. This was the last time three-month-old Zaylee Grace Fryar, a biracial female infant with black hair and brown eyes, was seen. She vanished alongside her mother, 28-year-old Shauna Marie Fryar. The two had recently moved into the home of Shauna's estranged husband, Michael Fryar, just days before they disappeared. Michael Fryar told authorities he left the residence to go to the store and returned to find both Shauna and baby Zaylee gone. Crucially, essential items such as Shauna's car, wallet, cell phone, and Zaylee's diaper bag were all left behind, suggesting a departure that was not planned to be a long one. The days that followed were filled with a deepening sense of dread. Because Shauna had a history of disappearing for days at a time, Michael Fryar did not immediately report them missing, waiting until May 5th. A day later, a tragic discovery was made in the Cumberland River near downtown Nashville when Shauna's body was recovered. It took several days to identify her, but on May 10, investigators confirmed the deceased was indeed Shauna Fryar. There was no trace of Zaylee. Authorities believe Shauna was murdered in or near her Millersville home before her body was transported to Nashville. Although her body was badly decomposed, it showed signs of obvious injuries. In the wake of this grim finding, an Amber Alert was issued for the missing infant. The investigation into Zaylee's disappearance and Shauna's murder has been fraught with complexities and sorrow. Shauna had a known history of drug abuse, and it is believed she may have left the house to find drugs on the night she vanished. Zaylee's biological father, Thurman McMurry, was incarcerated at the time and was not considered a suspect. Suspicion fell heavily on Michael Fryar, who had a history of violence and provided inconsistent statements to the police. Despite being the primary suspect, he was never charged in connection with the case and has since passed away. Years later, in 2015, the case was reclassified as a homicide investigation after new forensic evidence was discovered, but it has since grown cold. The case of Zaylee Fryar is a heart-wrenching puzzle; while authorities have considered the tragic possibility that she may have met a fate similar to her mother's, there remains a glimmer of hope that she could be alive, unaware of her own story.
