Shenan Thompson, a 56-year-old African American male, was fatally shot on the evening of November 10, 2022, while sitting on the back porch of his home in the Bronzeville neighborhood of Chicago, IL. According to reports, Thompson was attacked at around 10:15 p.m. and sustained two gunshot wounds to the chest. He was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival.
The investigation into Thompson's death led to the arrest of Kenneth Haywood, a 30-year-old man who was on parole at the time of the incident. Haywood, who had been living with his mother and Thompson, was charged with first-degree murder. On the night of the shooting, Haywood was reportedly acting strangely and refused to take his hands out of his pockets. As Thompson approached the back door to go inside, Haywood allegedly shot him twice in the chest. Haywood then fled the scene, discarding one of his jackets at a CTA train station before turning himself in to the police two days later.
During the court proceedings, Assistant State’s Attorney Christopher Nugarus presented evidence that Haywood was the only person inside the home at the time of the shooting. Three family members identified Haywood from surveillance footage taken as he fled the area. Despite this, Haywood's public defender argued that there was no physical evidence, no eyewitnesses, and no video of the shooting itself. Cook County Judge Susana Ortiz acknowledged the circumstantial evidence but decided that it was not sufficient to hold Haywood without bail. Haywood was subsequently held on a $400,000 D-bond and is due back in court on December 2, 2022.
The motive for the shooting remains unclear, and no firearm was recovered during the investigation. The case highlights the complexities and challenges faced by law enforcement and the judicial system in securing convictions in cases with primarily circumstantial evidence. The tragic death of Shenan Thompson has left his family and community seeking justice and answers.
