On September 21, 2024, a tragic incident occurred in the Little Village neighborhood on Chicago's Southwest Side. A mass shooting took place during a prayer vigil held in the front yard of a residence in the 2500 block of South Spaulding Avenue. The vigil was being held to honor a man who had recently passed away.
At approximately 10:08 p.m., a Jeep stopped on the street, and an individual exited the vehicle and opened fire on the gathering.
A total of seven people were shot, including 32-year-old Froylan Garcia of Berwyn, Illinois. Garcia suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was among the seven victims who self-transported to Mt. Sinai Hospital. Despite medical efforts, Garcia was pronounced dead shortly after arrival at the hospital.
The other six victims, all men ranging in age from 31 to 51, suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Their conditions were reported as fair, with injuries including gunshot wounds to various parts of their bodies such as the thigh, rear, head, leg, hand, and calf.
The investigation into the shooting is ongoing, with Area Four Detectives working to gather information and identify the perpetrator. As of the latest reports, no arrests have been made. Police have been canvassing the neighborhood, distributing flyers, and urging anyone with information to come forward to assist in the investigation.
The community has been deeply affected by the incident, with local leaders, including the office of 25th Ward Alderman Byron Sigcho-Lopez, issuing statements encouraging residents to cooperate with the police and expressing concern for the well-being of the community.
