In the fall of 1974, the city of Cordele, Georgia, was rocked by a violent crime that would leave a lasting mark on the community. On October 21st, a 55-year-old white male named William Culpepper was at his job as a clerk at a local liquor store. His day, however, took a tragic turn when a man entered the establishment with the intent to rob it.
The assailant, Thomas Knight, who was on the run after escaping from a jail in Florida, entered the store and shot Culpepper, killing him.
Another clerk present during the robbery, A.V. Norton, was also shot and injured but survived. Knight, who would later convert to Islam and change his name to Askari Abdullah Muhammad, already had a history of violent offenses. Prior to the murder in Cordele, he had been involved in the kidnapping and murder of his employer and his employer's wife in Florida.
Following the murder of William Culpepper, Knight was eventually apprehended. However, the legal proceedings for his crimes primarily took place in Florida, where he was already facing significant charges. Due to the severity of his crimes in Florida, which included the murder of a corrections officer while on death row, Georgia authorities decided against prosecuting him for Culpepper's murder.
Knight's case went through a lengthy legal battle in the Florida court system. Ultimately, for the murder of the corrections officer, he was sentenced to death. On January 7, 2014, Thomas Knight, also known as Askari Abdullah Muhammad, was executed in Florida for the crimes he had committed there, bringing a close to his violent history. While justice was served for his Florida crimes, the decision not to prosecute in Georgia left the community of Cordele without a local trial for the murder of William Culpepper.
