In the early morning hours of February 2, 1987, the city of Augusta, Georgia, was the scene of a tragic event that would claim the life of a dedicated law enforcement officer. Bruce Williford, a 28-year-old white male, had served as a deputy with the Richmond County Sheriff's Office for seven years. On that fateful Monday, he and his partner were tasked with serving misdemeanor warrants on a former deputy, Dennis Murray.
The warrants were for non-payment of child support.
Around 7:45 a.m., Deputy Williford and his partner arrived at Murray's residence. The situation quickly escalated when Murray took Williford's partner hostage, creating a tense and dangerous standoff. A call for backup was made, but before more help could arrive, the situation turned deadly. In an attempt to evade arrest, Murray shot Deputy Williford in the chest. The wound proved to be fatal, and Deputy Williford was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Medical College of Georgia Hospital.
During the confrontation, another deputy, Larry Keel, was also shot and wounded but survived his injuries after undergoing surgery. As he tried to flee the scene, the suspect, Dennis Murray, was shot and wounded by a backup officer. He was then taken into custody. For his actions that day, Murray received multiple life sentences. The death of Deputy Bruce Williford, a husband and father, was a profound loss for his family, the Richmond County Sheriff's Office, and the entire Augusta community.
