In a tragic turn of events that began under the guise of a friendly visit, 40-year-old David Andrew Robertson was killed in his home near Marietta, Georgia, on April 5, 2004. A former youth pastor, Joshua Kevin Drucker, who was acquainted with Robertson, was later convicted of the murder.
On that fateful day, Drucker and a companion, Melissa McCrayer, went to Robertson's house. While the initial interactions were seemingly amicable, the situation escalated violently.
Prosecutors stated that as Robertson was getting up to get some marijuana from his kitchen, Drucker shot him. When Robertson's girlfriend, 25-year-old Lora Nikolova, reacted in horror and began hitting Drucker, he shot her as well.
The motive for the killings appeared to be a combination of revenge and robbery. Drucker claimed that Robertson had supplied drugs to his sister, leading to an overdose that resulted in permanent brain damage. After the shootings, Drucker and McCrayer stole a wallet, jewelry, and cellphones from the home. They then went on a spending spree, using the stolen items to pay for drugs, hotel rooms, and entertainment at a strip club before being apprehended by police less than two days later.
In October 2011, a Cobb County jury found Joshua Kevin Drucker guilty of two counts of malice murder and two counts of felony murder for the deaths of Robertson and Nikolova. The jury also convicted him of armed robbery, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and credit card fraud. Following the conviction, prosecutors sought the death penalty for Drucker. McCrayer, who testified against Drucker, was also indicted on murder and robbery charges, but the prosecution did not seek the death penalty against her.
