In the early morning hours of July 5, 2013, a night of entertainment in downtown Macon, Georgia, turned deadly for 17-year-old Jamonni Bland. The young man, a male, was fatally shot in an underground parking deck near the Zodiac Lounge. The violence that claimed his life was the culmination of a brawl that had erupted inside the bikini bar. Though the fight did not initially involve him, the ensuing chaos tragically ended his life.
The altercation began inside the Zodiac Lounge and quickly escalated, spilling out into the nearby parking area. In the midst of the mayhem, another man was shot inside the club, and several others sustained injuries from gunfire outside. It was in this volatile environment that Jamonni Bland was shot and killed around 3:30 a.m. Law enforcement officials at the time stated there was no indication that Bland was a participant in the original conflict.
The investigation into the shooting led to a number of arrests and uncovered a connection to a local street gang. Authorities identified Andre Bonner as the individual who fatally shot Bland. John Michael Hollingshed Jr., another man involved in the incident, admitted to shooting a different individual at the club that night and testified that he gave the gun to Bonner, who then shot Bland.
The legal proceedings that followed brought several individuals to justice for their roles in the events of that night. In addition to the murder charge against Bonner, several others faced serious charges. Kiyo Johnson and Jimmy Lee Scott III both pleaded guilty to charges of aggravated assault and violating Georgia's anti-gang statute. Another individual, Miranda Victoria Pettiway, was identified as the driver who transported two of the men, including the injured Bonner, to the hospital after the shooting and was charged as a party to the crime. The case highlighted the dangerous intersection of nightlife and gang-related violence, leaving a family to mourn the senseless loss of a young life.
