In the summer of 2020, the life of 16-year-old Amari Elijah Deloney, a promising male student-athlete from Decatur, Alabama, was tragically cut short. On the evening of July 4th, Deloney was shot and subsequently died from his injuries, leaving a community in mourning.
Amari, a junior at Decatur High School, was known for his athletic abilities as a starter on both the basketball and baseball teams. He was remembered as an inspiration to his younger siblings and cousins.
His sudden death sent ripples of grief through his family and the wider Decatur community.
In the days following the shooting, the Decatur Police Department launched an investigation into the homicide. Their efforts led to the identification of a suspect, Jyasi Qiym Neville. Neville was subsequently arrested and charged with capital murder in connection with Amari Deloney's death. The investigation suggested that the shooting was not a random act of violence, as evidence indicated that Neville and Deloney were known to each other.
Following his arrest, Jyasi Neville was indicted by a grand jury on the charge of capital murder. As the case proceeded through the legal system, Neville eventually entered a guilty plea to the lesser charge of murder. In February 2023, he was sentenced to 30 years in prison for his role in the death of Amari Elijah Deloney.
