On a Friday afternoon, February 7, 2020, the life of 22-year-old Ghaith Hameed Vest was tragically cut short. Born in Amman, Jordan, the young man was found deceased by Decatur Police Department officers who were responding to a shooting in the 300-block of Herring Road SW in Decatur, Alabama, at approximately 3:30 p.m. Ghaith, a resident of Hartselle, had sustained fatal gunshot wounds.
The investigation into the homicide led authorities to identify a suspect in the case.
Martavius Cortez Lee was subsequently arrested and charged with murder in connection with Ghaith's death. Following his arrest, Lee was held at the Morgan County Jail on a $150,000 bond.
Ghaith Vest was a graduate of Danville High School, where he had been an active student, participating in both football and baseball. After high school, he pursued vocational training and completed a welding program at the Global Tech Institute. He is survived by his parents, Annice Marie H. Vest and Howard R. Vest, as well as three stepbrothers and other extended family members. A celebration of his life was held on Thursday, February 13, 2020, followed by his burial at Roselawn Cemetery.
