In the early hours of a Sunday morning in Jonesboro, Georgia, a dispute that began with words inside a local bar tragically escalated to gunfire, ending the life of 42-year-old Nathan Lee Adams. A former Forest Park police officer, Adams was at Benefield's bar on February 16, 2014, when a verbal altercation erupted between him and another man. The disagreement spilled out into the parking lot, where the situation took a fatal turn.
The man with whom Adams had been arguing, Jessie Clyde Murray Jr. of Doraville, allegedly went to his vehicle to retrieve a gun. When Adams followed him outside, a physical struggle ensued. It was during this confrontation that shots were fired, and Adams was fatally wounded. Murray later claimed to police that he acted in self-defense, stating that Adams had shot at him first and that he had returned fire in an attempt to protect his wife who was still inside the bar.
Following the shooting, Jessie Clyde Murray Jr. was taken into custody by authorities. He was subsequently charged with felony murder and aggravated assault in connection with the death of Nathan Lee Adams. The incident left friends and family of the former officer mourning the sudden and violent loss of a man who had once served to protect his community.
