In the late hours of August 30, 2014, the lives of 23-year-old Jeronta Brown and his 21-year-old pregnant girlfriend, Briana Brooks, were tragically cut short in a brutal act of violence that began outside his mother's DeKalb County home. The couple was returning from a late-night food run when they were ambushed by two men. The assailants, later identified as Andre Gay and Richard Wilson, abducted the young couple, initiating a horrifying ordeal for their families.
A short time after
the kidnapping, Jeronta Brown's mother received a chilling phone call demanding a ransom of $150,000 for the safe return of her son and his girlfriend. During the call, she was briefly allowed to speak with her son, who urged her to comply, stating, 'These boys are not playing.' This would be the last time she would hear her son's voice. The family was unable to meet the kidnappers' demands, sealing the tragic fate of the young couple. Several hours later, a passerby discovered Brown and Brooks on the side of Ridge Avenue in northwest Atlanta, approximately 17 miles from where they were taken. They were handcuffed together, and both had been shot in the head in an execution-style manner. Jeronta Brown was pronounced dead at the scene.
Briana Brooks, who was seven months pregnant at the time of the attack, was found clinging to life. She was rushed to a nearby hospital where she was placed on life support. In a bittersweet turn of events, doctors were able to deliver her baby prematurely. However, Brooks succumbed to her injuries and was taken off life support a few days later. Tragically, the infant also passed away several days after birth. The heinous nature of the crime sparked an intense investigation by the Atlanta Police Department.
The investigation led police to Andre Gay, who was arrested in late September 2014. His accomplice, Richard 'Fathead' Wilson, was captured in Birmingham, Alabama, in early October of the same year while attempting to pawn an assault rifle. It was later revealed that Gay was on parole at the time of the murders, having been released from prison earlier that year after serving 22 years for a previous double murder. In September 2018, both Andre Gay and Richard Wilson pleaded guilty to a multitude of charges, including murder, feticide, and kidnapping. They were subsequently sentenced to four consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole, plus an additional 65 years in prison, ensuring they would spend the remainder of their lives behind bars for the senseless and brutal murders of Jeronta Brown and Briana Brooks.
