In the early morning hours of December 30, 2014, the life of 24-year-old Jarvis Hughes was tragically cut short in his Conyers, Georgia, apartment. A woman in the residence made a frantic 911 call shortly before 3 a.m., reporting that Hughes had been shot at least once. When police arrived at the Meadow Crossing Apartments on Irwin Bridge Road, they found Hughes deceased at the scene. Investigators immediately began processing the apartment for evidence and speaking with neighbors to piece together the events that led to the young man's death.
The investigation quickly led Conyers police to three suspects: 18-year-old Joey Armour Jackson, 28-year-old Paul Stephen Greene, and 17-year-old Martria Hunley, all from Conyers. Within days of the shooting, all three were arrested and faced with murder charges. Further investigation suggested a possible motive for the deadly encounter. According to statements made by Hunley to the police, the trio had gone to Hughes's apartment with the intention of purchasing marijuana but had instead devised a plan to rob him.
During a committal hearing, more details of the case emerged. The court heard that two different. 22-caliber handguns were used in the shooting. A search of the apartment where Greene and Hunley were living uncovered a book bag containing a white mask and two handguns matching the caliber used in the murder. Blood was also found on the bottom of Greene's pants and shoes. Hunley told investigators that Greene had put Hughes in a headlock and pointed a gun at his head before she fled the apartment and heard a gunshot. She also implicated Jackson in the plan. While Jackson admitted to being with Greene and Hunley on the night of the murder, he denied going to Hughes's apartment.
In addition to the murder charges, Jackson and Greene were also charged with aggravated assault and cruelty to children, as Hughes's girlfriend and her children were present in the apartment at the time of the home invasion. Jackson faced additional charges of possession of marijuana and theft by receiving stolen property. Greene was also charged with two counts of possession or transfer of a firearm. Hunley was charged with felony murder and murder. The case was bound over to the Rockdale County Superior Court for trial.
